BASIC SUSPENSION

THIS IS THE SECOND PHASE OF GAIT, WHEN THE FOOT MOVES INTO FULL GROUND CONTACT. THE FOOT BECOMES A MOBILE ADAPTER, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL FOR EFFICIENT, EASY WALKING. IT’S PARTNER PHASE IS PROPULSION

Golden rule: Your whole foot must stay on the ground at all times

You should feel it: In the gluts, calves, hamstrings

Tips and tricks: Focus on the bottom of foot ‘bottoming out’

Right side

SETUP:

Stand in a lunge position. Your right leg is your working leg. Your back leg, the left has a straight knee and heel slightly off the ground – Body facing forward

MOVEMENT:

  • Weight mainly in right leg

  • Focus on the bone just in front of your ankle (Talus)

  • Bend your front knee while allowing your Talus to rotate inwards towards the left, flattening your arch

  • DO NOT drive this movement with your knee, simply allow the knee to follow

  • Your pelvis will turn to the left

  • Your pelvis will hike up on the right / drop on the left

  • Keep your trunk and head facing forwards.

  • Return to centre.

** THIS IS A SLOW AND DELIBERATE MOVEMENT, AND SHOULD TAKE 3 SECONDS TO COMPLETE
