fungal nails

~ LOOK FAMILIAR_ ~_If you’ve had nail po

Fungal toenails, or Onychomycosis are caused by the introduction of fungal cells to the nail bed. It is an extremely common condition, affecting thousands of people.

It is caused by a number of different fungal strains. The nail will take on a discoloured appearance; white, yellow or brown and will become thick and friable.

While the fungus itself will not cause ill-health in the affected person, it is unsightly particularly during summer when open toed shoes are preferred. It is not always possible to pinpoint the source of the infection though poor foot hygiene, particularly in communal showers, or the use of nail bars who do not use sterilised instruments can be factors that contribute to infection.

So what can I do?

Firstly, have your nail looked at by your Podiatrist. There are other conditions that can look similar to a fungal infection so it is better to get confirmation before beginning treatment. The podiatrists at Footpath Podiatry Balwyn with determine if you toenail has a fungal infection. They will then advise you on your treatment options.

Presently, the most common treatment is a topical paint such as Loceryl or Gordochom. These treatments are time consuming and results are varied. They require absolute diligence on the patient’s part and must be used in conjunction with a recommended foot hygiene program. There is also an oral tablet option, though many people are not suited to this. A relatively new treatment option involves a Laser. This is showing around 80% success.
